ACTION FIGURE ARCHIVES: WARDUKE FROM ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

I've never played Dungeons & Dragons or Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. My roommates in college played the game, but they were advanced players and not interested in having some newbie like me join their campaigns. However, they were totally fine with me joining some other RPGs (role playing games) like Star Wars, Vampire, and Robotech. I really wanted to play D&D or AD&D because I wanted to go up against the Warduke.

It might have been Christmas 1983 when I received the Warduke action figure, which was one of the 'evil' characters from the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons toy line from LJN. I have no recollection of who the gift was from, but it was a totally awesome action figure. I was doing the RPG thing at the time but I watching the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon which was pretty cool.

The action figure was - and still is - incredibly cool. The helmet is awesome and I love that you can not see the face but a couple of red glowing eyes. Another impressive detail in my opinion is that the guy wears one half of a chainmail type of armor while the other part of his body is totally exposed. The Warduke action figure came equipped with a sword and a shield.

Warduke was used to battle action figures from my Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Masters of the Universe collection. I have no idea what happened to him, but I'm 95% certain Warduke met a certain fate during my parents infamous 1989 garage sale. Many action figures and comics of value were sold for $.25 a piece.

I have started a new series at The Two-Headed Nerd Comic Book Cast site called The Tales of The TD-Dubs. My first article is titled 'The Zero Bidders of The Transformers Universe' and it deals with my experiences selling vintage action figures from the 1980s on Ebay. TAPASTIC RESULTS FROM DAY 1

Yesterday we added The Red Devil to Tapastic and here are the results. We had 86 pageviews, one person favorited our comic, and there were no comments. Having 86 page views on the first day is nice, and I'll add some more pages on Friday to get more people interested in the series.

ACTION FIGURE ARCHIVES: CONDOR FROM M.A.S.K.

Action Figure Archives is a new series at Champion City Comics where I write about great vintage toys. This article will be featured every Tuesday, so be prepared to take a stroll down memory lane.

As a member of Generation X, I have fond memories of playing with my toys, and over the past five years I cleaned up some old Star Wars, Masters of The Universe, Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Transformers, and G.I. Joe toys and gave them to my children. Last night, my daughter placed a Stormtrooper in the driver seat of a G.I. Joe APC and all was well in the universe. While that is wonderful, I am having a hard time accepting the fact that the toys of my youth are now labeled as 'vintage'.

I'm starting off the Action Figure Archives with Condor from M.A.S.K.. I owned this toy as a kid and last year my sister purchased it sans the action figure at a garage sale for my son as a bath time toy. At first I didn't recognize the toy, but my son started moving some parts around and the motorcycle turned into a helicopter. I had a M.A.S.K. flashback. Do you remember M.A.S.K.?

M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) was developed by Kenner in 1985 and it definitely appealed to me because it seemed to be a great mix of G.I. Joe and Transformers. The G.I. Joe fan in me liked the military conflict between the good guys of M.A.S.K. battling the villains of V.E.N.O.M. (The Vicious Evil Network Of Mayhem). Yes, the acronyms are terrible, but there is only so much you can do in the world of kids toys. Illusion was the ultimate weapon, so both sides had vehicles that could transform into combat vehicles. The Transformers fan in me liked this concept because a big rig could turn into a mobile defense unit or a helicopter could change into an airplane. The icing on the cake was the fact that the operator of the vehicle wore a mask that had special powers.

Condor was one of the toys that I owned when M.A.S.K. was popular. As I mentioned earlier, it was a motorcycle that turned into a helicopter. The toy had a few weapons. You can see them in the second image below. There is a gun where the front headlight of the motorcycle is located and then you can see the two guns at the lower portion of the transformed motorcycle. The blades spin around for proper helicopter action.

The operator of this vehicle was Brad Turner, a rock musician, and his mask power was "hocus pocus" which meant he could project holograms. Would it not make more sense for Brad to be a magician rather than a rock star? Rock stars should not have a hocus pocus themed mask. Brad's mask should be called something like shredder with a sonic rock and roll power that stuns the enemy. Think of Banshee from the X-Men. Am I right?

I can not remember the site, but I once read an article that claimed that the M.A.S.K. franchise suffered from poor quality toys. If I remember correctly, I had four M.A.S.K. vehicles and never had a problem with quality. My son plays with the Condor toy frequently during bath time and it is still in great shape. It transforms without any problems, and we have had Condor chase down a few bad guy Hot Wheels cars.

I have good memories of my M.A.S.K. toys. Many Saturday afternoons were spent battling V.E.N.O.M.. This was the last toy line that I played with as a kid. I turned twelve when M.A.S.K. was introduced and it was not viewed as cool to be playing with toys. It was also the time when I started a love affair with rock and roll, so my Saturday afternoons were dedicated to listening to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Now that I have kids, I am playing with them and watching my kids come up with fun adventures. I've noticed that some people have love for the M.A.S.K. franchise and you can find some great M.A.S.K. items for sale at Ebay.

Did you own a Condor M.A.S.K. toy or another M.A.S.K. toy as a kid? Share your comments below!

GREETINGS FROM WEBCOMICS LAND: SWITCHING GEARS...AGAIN

I want our faithful followers to know that I'm switching things up a bit at Champion City Comics. We will still post webcomics to our site, but we will have some new features you'll enjoy. I'm also bringing back a couple of features that have been successful in the past, but were put aside due to other commitments. I'll have more news on that later this week.

What's with the changes?

Over the past four years, I have watched Champion City Comics develop as a webcomics community. Our website has been a great place to discover some great webcomics, and I am proud of that work. Fans will come here to check out our webcomics, but I've tried other features to bring in readers.

Like what?

We had comic book reviews, a song of the day feature, DVD reviews, movie trailer reviews, and tips for artists. Some were wildly popular and others were not popular with our readers. Our webcomic production was moving quickly when we had those features, so I chose webcomics over articles.

The webcomic well has run dry?

No. We still have some webcomics in production, but bringing back certain articles is a nice touch. Daily traffic has picked up and I've decided to make some more changes at Champion City Comics.

What can we expect?

I'd like to have comic book reviews, movie reviews, various articles, DVD reviews, and movie trailer reviews brought back to the Champion City mix. I would also love to do a podcast, but I do not have the equipment or time for that project. I'm hoping to have an article about vintage toys and maybe have some articles about classic cartoons.

WHA' HAPPENED?

Dudes and dudettes! I totally flaked and forgot to update the site yesterday. My bad. How do I explain my actions? Help me out, Fred Willard.

ANOTHER STEAMPUNK SNEAK PEEK

Christopher Smith has written a story for our upcoming steampunk anthology and Christopher is working with artist Joe Haemmerle. This story is in development, and take a look at Joe's work on Christopher's story. All I can tell you is that it is a post-apocalyptic steampunk tale and you will not be disappointed.
