GREETINGS FROM WEBCOMICS LAND: THE EMBEDDED PDF

Champion City Comics has produced more than twenty creator owned comics over the past four years, and I am very proud of the work we have developed. Our titles feature superhero stories, crime noir thrillers, tales of war, sci-fi adventures, and humor. Just click here to view our list of fantastic comics.

All of our comics are posted as embedded PDFs, which has annoyed a few readers. The embedded PDF has been the only major criticism I have read concerning Champion City Comics since we launched four years ago. When I started Champion City Comics, I thought that embedding a PDF would be the most beneficial and easy way to read our comics because embedded PDFs can be viewed via scrolling or in a book mode. Apparently, it is not loved by everyone.

I have embedded a short story below by Darrin O'Toole and Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj titled The Amazing Mister X. As you can see, it is possible to scroll down page by page to view the story. If the text is too small, one can click on the magnifying glass with the + symbol to increase the size of the page. Also, the story is not long, so scrolling works as the best option. You can read the story below or scroll down for another example of an embedded document.

The next story is Dr. Death vs The Zombie (Version 1.0) by TonyDoug Wright and Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj. This superhero horror story is 116 pages long, so scrolling might not be your first option for reading. Do you want to read it like a book? OK, just follow my directions. First, click FULLSCREEN on the top left corner of the image below. The page should be expanded. Now, I need you to go to the bottom left corner and switch the viewing mode from SCROLL to BOOK and see what happens. Much better?

Doctor Death vs The Zombie I hope you enjoyed taking a look at our comics via an embedded PDF. TonyDoug Wright is the owner, editor, and head writer at Champion City Comics

HANK SCHRADER FROM BREAKING BAD

Kav's been watching Breaking Bad and decided to do a sketch of Hank Schrader. Dean Norris is the actor that plays Hank and he's fantastic in the role. If you've never watched Breaking Bad then you are missing out on one of the best TV shows of all time.

SUCCESS!

Erik Roman and I have developed a script for a Red Devil story, which will be featured in our upcoming steampunk anthology. I'm not going to give too much away, but it will be set during World War II, and is going to be awesome.

KICKSTARTER MY HEART FOLLOW-UP

Yesterday I posted some thoughts about using Kickstarter as a funding tool for our upcoming steampunk anthology. A friend at work talked to me about my post and gave me some good ideas about pledge goals if we use Kickstarter. Hey, these posts definitely get people thinking about what's going on at Champion City Comics.

GREETINGS FROM WEBCOMICS LAND: KICKSTARTER MY HEART?

As we approach our fourth anniversary at Champion City Comics we are planning our most ambitious project to date which is a 64 page full color steampunk anthology. An amazing creative team has been assembled, and we also have the very talented artist Steve Bryant on board to design the cover for our anthology. The steampunk anthology is going to happen, but how it will be delivered to the masses is becoming another question.

Initially we were going to create the anthology, and then develop a Kickstarter project to cover costs for publishing. Everything about Kickstarter appealed to me at first, but I then began to wonder if creating a Kickstarter page, making a promotional video, writing up a convincing testimony, and providing our backers with an ample supply of incentives was worth it in the long run. After awhile it seemed that we were adding more work to our anthology which made Kickstarter more of a nuisance.

I'm not here to rant against Kickstarter because creators have the right to find the best method of funding their projects. From my point of view, it seems easier to apply for a line of credit, work with a publisher, present our work to Diamond for distribution, and get our comic book printed when we have an agreement with Diamond for distributing our comic book.

This blog entry falls under the short and sweet category for verbage, but am I crazy to think Kickstarter is more work than it is worth?

STEAMPUNK ANTHOLOGY UPDATE

I'm working on my first steampunk script today and it will be a story set in The Red Devil universe. Last week, I met with artist Erik Roman and we mapped out a plan for a twelve page story full of action and suspense. What I love about writing for The Red Devil is the fact that it is set in a timeless universe where we could have a story set during World War II or the present.

Other members of the Champion City Comics community are working on their steampunk stories for our upcoming steampunk anthology. I'm aslo working with artist Ryan Cairns on a steampunk story set during the Civil War. I'm excited to be involved with these projects and will have more updates for our readers in the upcoming weeks.
