GREETINGS FROM WEBCOMICS LAND: KICKSTARTER MY HEART?
As we approach our fourth anniversary at Champion City Comics we are planning our most ambitious project to date which is a 64 page full color steampunk anthology. An amazing creative team has been assembled, and we also have the very talented artist Steve Bryant on board to design the cover for our anthology. The steampunk anthology is going to happen, but how it will be delivered to the masses is becoming another question.
TonyDoug Wright is the owner and editor of Champion City Comics
Initially we were going to create the anthology, and then develop a Kickstarter project to cover costs for publishing. Everything about Kickstarter appealed to me at first, but I then began to wonder if creating a Kickstarter page, making a promotional video, writing up a convincing testimony, and providing our backers with an ample supply of incentives was worth it in the long run. After awhile it seemed that we were adding more work to our anthology which made Kickstarter more of a nuisance.
I'm not here to rant against Kickstarter because creators have the right to find the best method of funding their projects. From my point of view, it seems easier to apply for a line of credit, work with a publisher, present our work to Diamond for distribution, and get our comic book printed when we have an agreement with Diamond for distributing our comic book.
This blog entry falls under the short and sweet category for verbage, but am I crazy to think Kickstarter is more work than it is worth?

A WESTERN THEMED STEAMPUNK PREVIEW
Artist Joe Haemmerle and writer Christopher Smith are working together on a post-apocalyptic Western steampunk story. I've reviewed the script and these two are working on a really good story for our steampunk anthology. Joe has submitted a preview of page one and I am excited to see how this story develops.

THE RED DEVIL AND STEAMPUNK!
Champion City Comics is currently working on a 64 page full-color steampunk anthology that we will self-publish this year. We know you are excited and we will keep our fans posted on a regular basis. Champion City Comics team members are working on their projects and we even have Steve Bryant of Athena Voltaire fame on board as our cover artist. Do we have anything else to report? YES! Part of the steampunk anthology will include a brand new story featuring our super-sexy crime-fighter The Red Devil!
If you haven't checked out The Red Devil then click here and enjoy this pulp inspired action comic by TonyDoug Wright, Erik Roman, and Joe Haemmerle.
Synopsis: Dublin O'Darby (The Red Devil) is an international crime-fighter who works for Sebastian Coronado, the director of an organization dedicated to combating cartels of evil. Joining The Red Devil is teenage sidekick Charlotte Murphy (Kid Diablo). In the exciting first issue, Red Devil and Kid Diablo track down a dangerous ninja, Silent Noise, who has stolen a mysterious ring which once belonged to a diabolical group of demon worshipers known as the Order of Methalius.

COMING SOON: GASLIGHT - A STEAMPUNK ADVENTURE
When I launched Champion City Comics during the fall of 2009, it was strictly for my comic book project. However, my one comic book project became three and then I decided to accept scripts from writers to see if they had an excellent story or two for the site. Reviewing scripts is not all fun and games because some writers lack the ability to create stories where characters have depth and the plot is well-structured or slightly interesting. And then there are the few that deliver an amazing story.
Lawrence Rider, a writer from England, contacted me back in June regarding a script he had in development. His story was titled Gaslight and it was a steampunk tale where a detective by the name of Solomon Cold investigates a series of abductions that are linked to a mad scientist known as the Pneumatist. His script was pretty solid and I did not have an artist available. But magic happens at Champion City because an artist, George Athanasiou, contacted me to see if he could be part of a webcomics project. His style was perfect for Gaslight so I teamed him up with Lawrence. In the upcoming months you will get to see the first four or five pages of this exciting tale. For now, enjoy some teaser artwork.
