Kav and Tony Break It Down: Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #98

Kav and Tony are two webcomic collaborators and lifelong comic book fans having fun reviewing titles from the Golden and Silver Age of Comics. They know these comic books were published with a young audience in mind, but they couldn't pass up the opportunity to make fun of goofy covers, ridiculous plots, silly dialogue, and pseudo-scientific shenanigans.

Kav: Back in the 60's DC did a survey and kids chose gorillas as their favorite cover feature, so they went way overboard on the gorilla covers. They popped up everywhere. Jimmy Olsen and the science fiction titles seem to have taken the brunt of the damage. Here we see the inevitable final result of this nonsense-Jimmy being forced to marry a gorilla by a Witch Doctor Superman. Many times where there was a gorilla, a witch doctor wasn't far behind. We see Jimmy's new wife already screaming at him about something. Get used to it buddy. Of course Lucy Lane has to be present whenever Jimmy is humiliated. I read a lot of these Jimmy Olsen stories and Superman is always depicted as the trickster character from Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. Kinda helpful but mostly not. In 'Midas of Metropolis' Jimmy had to spend a million dollars to get a million in 24 hours. He was down to his last 10 cents, it was Sunday, and everything was closed. Superman just stood there grinning instead of telling Jimmy to put the dime in the parking meter before he gets a ticket. He got the ticket. I've had friends like this. Don't ask me what Superman is stirring in the pot but it's an appropriate image for sure.

Tony: Superman is not only just a witch doctor, but he's the local witch doctor. Hopefully, Jimmy's health care plan has witch doctor Superman in his network. Also, I'm not fully convinced that Supes successfully completed an apprenticeship to earn his degree or certificate or whatever in witch doctoring. Dude probably didn't even do a residency. Why does local witch doctor Superman need a fire when he can boil that pot with his heat vision? I can only imagine the absurd plot that unfolds in this issue.

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: A JACK KIRBY BIO

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is the master of Silver Age Comics. He finds some strange and wonderful things in those old school comics. Today he has discovered a nice bio of Jack Kirby.

Here is a special treat for Jack Kirby Fans! From the Kamandi #32 "Giant" issue comes an awesome bio of THE KING! The name 'Kamandi' comes from where he was raised-the underground bunker 'Command D'. Kamandi is probably my favorite of Kirby's 'Fourth World' bronze age works. The stories are so lively and imaginative and the characters so memorable, while the art is some of the best. I highly recommend Kamandi for those who haven't read it, but stick with the Kirby books, not the later stuff. The Demon and Eternals are my second favorites. Better collect this stuff now because prices on Ebay are steadily climbing. Same with his Thor books-a very good investment as they are starting to spike. The Fantastic Four is already pretty well valued so you won't see many bargains there. Interest in Kirby is resurging and I myself got caught up in it. Didn't really like his stuff when I was younger but the older you get the more you can see the genius. I got about 20 Thor comics from a buddy then my hunt began and now I have 1.5 longboxes of Kirby!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: DR DOOM AND THE DUMB ALIENS

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is the master of Silver Age Comics. He finds some strange and wonderful things in those old school comics. Today he has discovered a very bad trade in Fantastic Four #16.

Ok this is a weird one from Fantastic Four #16. Dr Doom is trading the Fantastic Four to an alien race and apparently it is worth it to them to have a guy who can become a bridge, some dude to pound rocks, a human torch because they aren't advanced enough to develop flame throwers even though they have advanced beam weapons etc., and YIKES....a scullery maid! Sue Storm definitely needs a celebrity makeover! For this they trade world-conquering technology to Doom. They're like those little kids that you can trade a 'big' nickel for a 'small' dime. They must have got off the short spaceship I guess.

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: SUPERMAN THE MERMAN?

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is the master of Silver Age Comics. He finds some strange and wonderful things in those old school comics. Today he has some beef with Silver Age Superman comics.

In my opinion, Silver Age Superman is kinda slow on the draw, and this cover helps confirm it. Supes says he 'changed himself into a Merman so he could join Lori Lemaris under the sea'. Uh, dude, you are SUPERMAN, so you didn't have to turn yourself into anything to go live under the sea. Ok, if you go to the desert do you have to turn yourself into a Camel-Man? THINK people THINK!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: DR. STRANGE

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is the master of Silver Age Comics. He finds some strange and wonderful things in those old school comics. Today he has discovered a Dr. Strange that's not the Dr. Strange we all know and love.

Ok here's an odd one from Tales of Suspense #41 where we see 'Dr Strange' who is some weird villain. I guess Stan Lee forgot he used that name already when he went to create the Dr Strange we know later on.

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: TALES OF ASGARD

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is the master of Silver Age Comics. He finds some strange and wonderful things in those old school comics. Today he is sharing four cool panels from the reprint of an annual Tales of Asgard #1.

Here's a special treat from an early Journey Into Mystery issue which is possibly around issue number 85 titled 'Tales of Asgard'. Stan Lee was scripting direct from Norse mythology where we see a young Thor and Loki in action against some giants. We see Loki's propensity for evil, but we see Thor slowly being able to lift Uru higher each time he completes a heroic feat. Awesome stuff!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: THE FANTASTIC FOUR

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is the master of Silver Age Comics. He finds some strange and wonderful things in those old school comics. Today he has found another only used once superpower for The Fantastic Four.

One thing about the early Fantastic Four comics was that the powers of the foursome fluctuated wildly from Mr. Fantastic turning himself into a human chain with SEPARATE links to this panel. The Human Torch can apparently make running flame figures of himself!!! WTF? This is even worse than when The Flash made his costume perambulate to fight crime.

PS Johnny-they can easily figure out the real Human Torch is because he's THE ONE TALKING!!!!!!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: KAMANDI #26

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is the master of Silver Age Comics. When Kav finds a mistake in his Silver Age collection, he likes to share it with the faithful followers of Champion City Comics. Today, he has found an error in Kamandi #26, which was published in 1975 by DC Comics. Jack Kirby was the writer and the artist.

Jack Kirby was the MASTER, but he was awful at two things: using quotation marks incorrectly and science. Here's a bad science example from from Kamandi #26 the 'Last Boy on Earth' spots an 'insect skull' (note correct use of quote marks, bro). Note to Kirby: INSECTS HAVE EXOSKELETONS NOT SKULLS!!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #87

Champion City Comics artist and comic book guru, Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj, enjoys reading comic books from the Silver Age of Comics. He loves to share some of the craziest panels ever developed for comics. Today, he has found some amazing panels from Journey Into Mystery #87 which is titled 'Prisoner of the Reds'. Stan Lee was the writer and Jack Kirby did the pencils.

Journey Into Mystery #87 was the fifth Thor comic, and we have this scene where Thor, instead of just busting out of prison with his hammer, spins around to create 'shock waves'.

The commies think he might be one of them since he carries a HAMMER. Then, Thor exhibits a new power where he creates blinding sparks from rubbing his hammer. Stan Lee used to give his characters one-time powers like this all the time, but DC Comics never did this because they gave someone a certain set of powers, and stuck with it.

Also from Journey Into Mystery #87 comes this panel where a scientist claims that Thor's tunneling prowess is 'scientifically impossible!'. Dude, if you want scientifically possible, you're in the wrong comic book.

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: THE SUB-MARINER

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj continues to find some amazing discoveries while reading comics from the Silver Age of Comics. Today, Kav discovers some problems with Prince Namor (a.k.a. the Sub-Mariner) in The Fantastic Four #9. which was developed by the classic team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

More absurdities from The Fantastic Four #9! We see Sue Richards protecting the Sub-Mariner who says, "You've never ganged up on anyone before!" HUH?!? The FF always 'gangs up' on their foes!!! A true WTF. Also we see the Sub-Mariner suddenly has 'all the powers of sea creatures' including the 'radar sense' of the 'cave fish'. Really? And there's a fish that emits RADIO WAVES? Does his body contain TRANSISTORS??? Another WTF. Then the final panel-the Fantastic Four movie comes out-even though the 'movie' was a scam by Namor to trap his enemies, and NO scenes were ever shot! WTF??? Stan Lee-you're KILLING ME!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: THE HUMAN TORCH'S HEAT MIRAGE POWERS

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj continues to find some amazing discoveries while reading comics from the Silver Age of Comics. Today, we have Johnny Storm (a.k.a. The Human Torch) using his heat mirage powers in The Fantastic Four #17 by the classic team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

More Silver Age nonsense from Stan Lee! Did you know that the Torch could make moving flame copies of himself? In Fantastic Four # 17 he develops another power-the ability to make 'flame images', which are not flaming, but are full color copies of people. In this panel, he's made a copy of Doctor Doom. WTF?? YOU ARE KILLING ME, STAN LEE! KILLING ME!!!!

PS, another thing I have noticed in these old Fantastic Four comic books is the Invisible Girl hardly EVER uses her force field, when it would EASILY get her out of pinches. Like the Puppet Master grabs her and runs off, and I am thinking, "Dummy-if you used your FORCE FIELD he wouldn't be able to TOUCH YOU! Grrrrr....."

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: YOU'VE GOT MIND?

Comic book artist and guru, Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj, is a man on a mission. His mission is to find some of the most bizarre panels from the Silver Age of comics and share them with the world. Today, we have an interesting panel from The Fantastic Four #21, which was released in 1963 and was titled "The Hate-Monger".

KAV: Ok, here's a panel from The Fantastic Four #21. There are a couple of things that I want to talk about with this panel. First, let's talk about Ben Grimm's eyeball. On second thought, let's not talk about it. YEESH! Second, we see Nick Fury (No eyepatch???) insulting the Thing's intelligence when he can't even construct a valid sentence! Nick fail English? That's unpossible!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: REED RICHARDS WITH THE BIOLOGY FAIL

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj continues to find some amazing panels from the Silver Age of Comics. Today, we see that Reed Richards has earned a biology fail.

Kav's silver age discoveries continue! Here we see the so-called brainy Mr Fantastic claiming he has created a single celled organism, but he's holding up a multicellular critter with a body, eyes and appendages-someone should inform this brainiac that a single cell would be far too small to see with the naked eye, and would not have multicellular appendages!!!

KAV'S WTF?! COMIC BOOK COVERS: STRANGE ADVENTURES #79

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj found a great selection for his WTF?! comic book cover collection series. It is Strange Adventures #79, titled "Invaders From The Ice World" which was published in 1959 by DC Comics. The writer was Gardner Fox, the pencils were done by the great Carmine Infantino, and Gil Kane did the cover art.

Check out this horrible synopsis via the DC Wikia: Two Iowan boys build snowmen during an unseasonal snowfall, only to discover their creations missing the next morning. During the night, the snowmen had been possessed by energy beings from the planet Pluto and were now wreaking havoc in preparation for full-scale invasion. Darwin Jones of the DSI soon arrives on the scene and after a number of unsuccessful attempts to destroy the snowmen with heat, realizes that their paradoxical weakness is extreme cold. Earth is saved!

KAV'S THOUGHTS: Here we go with another silver age wtf cover-and just in time for the holidays! We see invaders from space who are advanced enough to build space ships but still have to wear battered old crappy hats. I have to wonder what the hell kind of evolution would ever possibly lead to critters like this.

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: FORGET ME NOT

Comic book artist and guru, Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj, enjoys reading comics from the Silver Age and Bronze Age of comics and sometimes he makes some amazing discoveries. He made the following discovery a few weeks ago, and it is a doozy.

Here we see a scene from Fantastic Four #4, wherein Johnny Storm throws Sub Mariner into the drink, reviving his memories. He had been living as a hobo for years, yet I find it hard to swallow he never noticed the wings on his ankles or that he never changed his shorts in 30 years.

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: YOU FLICKER!

Comic book artist and guru, Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj, enjoys reading comics from the Silver Age and Bronze Age of comics and sometimes he makes some amazing discoveries. Look what he found last week.

Ok, I caught Dr. Strange flipping the bird and now from Strange Tales #114 comes an even worse infraction and a warning to all letterers-watch it when you letter words with 'LI' in them!!! Get a little too close and just look what happens to Baron Mordo's speech!!!! Yikes!

KAV'S COMIC DISCOVERIES: JACK KIRBY

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj is our comic book guru and comic book artist. He has made a discovery regarding Jack Kirby's improper use of quotation marks.

I've been reading Jack Kirby's bronze age DC titles where they let him write, draw, AND edit the books. That was a big mistake because Kirby's use of quotation marks was deplorable. He scattered them everywhere, in a nonsensical manner. I ignored it until now but he went to far in an issue of Kamandi: The Last Boy On Earth! Kamandi is fighting some robot cops and Kirby has him thinking, "First, I'll borrow this "pseudo-cop's" pistol...". Because he put "pseudo-cops" in quotes, that means they're NOT pseudo-cops, but REAL cops which they're NOT. DC: KIRBY NEEDED AN EDITOR!!!! Yeesh.

KAV'S WTF?! COMIC BOOK COVER: OMAC #1 BY DC COMICS

Champion City Comics artist and comic book guru, Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj shared with me a photo of the cover of 1974's OMAC #1 from DC Comics. After looking at this cover all I could think was, "WTF is that?!"

OMAC stands for One-Man Army Corps and this series was developed by Jack Kirby following the cancellation of New Gods. OMAC was apparently Kirby's version of a futuristic Captain America. This #1 cover by Jack Kirby is truly bizarre because we see OMAC throwing a woman in a box who appears to be in pieces or bent in an odd way while partially submerged in water. I know the purpose of covers is to sell the comic book, but this is not one of Kirby's best in my opinion.

Kav's relentless peering over old Silver Age tales has revealed a major milestone! From Strange Tales #122 comes Dr Strange using a most forbidden mystical hand gesture! That's right folks, he's FLIPPING OFF the dreaded GOLGOL! Thus banishing the poor confused creature FOREVER!!!!!

THE MIGHTY THOR REPAIRS HIS HAMMER

Anand 'Kav' Kaviraj sent me a scanned page from Journey Into Mystery #120 which was a 1965 release by Marvel Comics. This issue was titled "With My Hammer In Hand.." and featured the classic comic book creative team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.  Thor's mighty hammer, Mjolnir, was in need of repair, so Thor decided to go to the best place possible, which was Pittsburgh. The mighty blast furnaces of  the "Steel City" did the trick and all was well in Thor's world.
